"The Striker vs The Grappler" Facts

This is not a simple one-off question where we can look at past events where a grappler beats a “stand-up” fighter at a particular venue, but requires a valid examination of all of the traditions, styles, and actual training of said fighters.  This answer goes even further to include the fighter’s mentality, true understanding of transitioning of stance, positioning and using the right weapon for maximum effectiveness.   Many people have the misconception that Muay Thai or “Thai Boxing” is just a “striking” or “stand up” art.  This generalized view is correct, however, grappling is also a major weapon in Muay Thai, often overlooked, and often under-utilized.

Muay Thai evolved from the combat art of “Krabi Krabong” (Thai Sword Fighting), and has grown into the present day ring sport of Muay Thai.  Thailand is the only country that has not been defeated in battle.  If a Thai soldier fell to the ground during battle, not only do they have to worry about heavy armor and weapons, they also had to watch out from the enemy standing above them with an 8 foot spear and ability to kick with lethal force to their head.  Which person would you rather be?

“The Striker vs The Grappler” Verdict

No matter what sweep, arm lock, choke or triangle I know how to execute, I would rather be the guy with a spear or sword standing above a grounded enemy.  It’s good to understand ground submissions and defense.   A good Muay Thai clinch or “prum”, also includes knees, hands, elbows, shoulders, the head, hips and even kicks.  The same basic principles of positioning, leverage, timing and countering can be used for ground survival and fighting. These aspects of the “Real” Muay Thai Fighter need to be considered when asking the question.  Many, if not all, Mixed Martial Artists and/or Grapplers are not trained full-circle in the art of Muay Thai as it was and is meant to be executed.  This is what The Aboy Gym (T.A.G.) imparts to its pupils.
