How Old is Too Old?
When should I train in Muay Thai?
When you think of Muay Thai, the first image that pops into your head is most likely a young, lean, and aggressive twenty-something. Muay Thai is typically regarded as a sport for young people, but does that mean that older people cannot train? And even if older folks can train, exactly how old is TOO old?
Although other ancient arts, such as Tai Chi and Kung Fu, may see a higher percentage of older practitioners, that does not mean that these are the only martial arts that are practical for the more mature set. Muay Thai does require a degree of strength and athleticism not typically associated with older generations, but those qualities can be developed over time. Will a younger person have an advantage in the ring? Probably. Is that advantage a showstopper for older folks? Not at all!
So, how old is too old?
That depends. While Muay Thai is quite physical, it is also intellectual. In many respects, age is a mindset.
Anyone who is relatively:
- has the desire to learn
- the drive to see things through
should be able to successfully train, regardless of age.
